World Oral Health Day 2017

Tomorrow, March 20, 2017, marks the 4th annual World Oral Health Day, a global event organized by FDI World Dental Federation. The international awareness campaign was developed to raise awareness of the importance of good oral health and its relationship with general health and well-being. According to the event website, the date of WOHD was ch0sen to reflect:

  • Seniors must have a total of 20 natural teeth at the end of their life to be considered healthy
  • Children should possess 20 baby teeth
  • Healthy adults must have a total of 32 teeth and 0 dental cavities
  • Expressed on a numerical basis this can be translated as 3/20 hence March 20

This year’s campaign, Live Mouth Smart, encourages people to enjoy a healthy, functional mouth from childhood into old age by taking control of their oral health. A healthy mouth enables you to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow and convey a range of emotions, all without pain, discomfort and disease. Regardless of age, whether you’re 5 or 85, oral health is crucial to general health and well-being.

In order to Live Mouth Smart, the campaign suggests that you:

  • Adopt good oral hygiene habits from early in life. Regular dental check-ups help to maintain optimal oral health in old age and even promotes a longer life expectancy. Good oral hygiene habits can also lead to freedom from physical pain and emotional suffering caused by oral disease.
  • Avoid risk factors, such as tobacco, harmful use of alcohol and unhealthy diets, especially those with high amounts of sugar. This can help protect your oral health and prevent other conditions such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes.
  • Understand good oral health is much more than a nice smile. Also, oral disease can impact every aspect of your life, including even the most basic of functions.

The WOHD global events are made possible by the unrestricted grants provided by official partners, including Dental Tribune International, Wrigley, Phillips, Henry Schein, and Unilever. Visit the official WOHD website to find out how you can get involved.
