What is Conscious Sedation Dentistry?

If you meet with your Miami sedation dentist, you might hear him talk about conscious sedation dentistry.  But what is the difference between conscious sedation and sedation dentistry?  Basically, with conscious sedation, the patient is awake and verbally responsive but in a very relaxed state.

The type of anesthesia used for conscious sedation is also sometimes used for brain surgeries when they need the patient’s brain activity to be at a certain level.  The patient feels no pain though, so is not in discomfort.  Conscious sedation dentistry is being used across the nation, including Miami, to help ease the anxiety many patients feel when receiving oral care.

A recent article from the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine states that people who suffer from an intense fear of going to the dentist will continuously put off oral care and possibly put themselves at risk of more severe dental issues.  If performed by a highly skilled dentist, conscious sedation dentistry carries little risk and can truly make oral care pain free.  Some people are a little disturbed about possibly being awake, but the dentist will walk you through the procedure and ensure you are comfortable at all times.
