What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is the technical term for grinding of the teeth as well as severe clenching.  It’s a very common affliction affecting millions of individuals.  Most people, to some degree, grind or clench their teeth here and there, but when the grinding becomes detrimental to your oral health, your Miami dentist can find you relief and help to reverse the process.

According to Science Daily’s website, bruxism is caused by the activation of the chewing reflex.  They point out that chewing is a complex neuromuscular activity controlled by reflex nerves controlled by the brain, sometimes involuntarily.  While brain control is active in sleep, the reflex is activated causing an abnormal chewing movement.  Many experts believe that bruxism reflects anxiety, digestive problems or disturbed sleeping patterns.

Science Daily mentions that some research suggests that children who grind their teeth are more likely to be withdrawn and struggle in school, while additional research shows bruxism is linked to sleep apnea and is prevalent in people with sleeping disorders.  Bruxism can also contribute to jaw pain, severe wearing away of enamel and may be linked to a lack of symmetry in the teeth.  Your dentist will be able to recognize signs of bruxism and if you think this process is affecting your oral health, talk to your sedation dentist about your options.
