Top Seven Worst Foods for Your Mouth

Very interesting article on Yahoo! Shine today: “7 Worst Foods for Your Teeth” by The Editors at RealAge.  We all know how bad table sugar is for our teeth and how it contributes directly to tooth decay, but there are some items on the list that may surprise you.  Here’s the top seven:

  1. Soft drinks
  2. Sports drinks
  3. Sour coated candy
  4. Energy drinks
  5. Fruit juice
  6. Fresh fruit
  7. Vinegar

It’s really too bad that so many sugary drinks are readily available for the masses since it wreaks havoc on our teeth.  It’s disappointing to hear that otherwise healthy things such as fruit and vinegar are bad for your teeth, but the article does offer some useful tips to counteract the decay that may occur from consuming these 7 things.

First, avoid snacking between meals to keep acid down.  Do not hold sugar drinks in your mouth.  Chew sugarless gum after a meal to neutralize acid.  Consume high-calcium milk or cheese with meals to help harden enamel.  Brush with fluoride regularly, and of course visit your sedation dentist twice a year to ensure your mouth is in good shape.
