National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day 2016

Mark your calendars! This Saturday, April 30, 2016 is the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. For the 11th consecutive year, the initiative provides a safe, convenient and responsible way of disposing any unused prescription drugs, while trying to educate the general public about the potential danger for abuse of medications. According to the

National Institute on Drug Abuse,  in 2011, 52 million people in the US age 12+ had used prescription drugs non-medically at least once in their lifetime, 6.2 million in the past month.

For the 5th year in a row, the American Dental Association (ADA) has officially signed on to support the initiative, according to a recent news article. ADA President Carol Gomez Summerhays and Executive Director Kathleen T. O’Loughlin teamed up to compose a letter to Charles Rosenberg, acting administrator for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, to express their “enthusiastic support.”

“As prescribers of opioid pain medications, dentists have a role to play in preventing their abuse, misuse, and diversion,” they stated. “One way is to counsel parents on how to safely secure and dispose of unused medications. Another is to tell patients about National Prescription Drug Take-Back events and prescription drug disposal sites in their area.”

Unused medications will be accepted between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at several collection sites across the country. To find one near you, visit the DEA website.
