Dental Implants Continuously Improving

Dental implants have become a very common practice in many sedation dentistry practices and with good reason.  They look great, stay in place, and give a more natural and comfortable feel for the patient.  This isn’t to say they are perfect, but the process of implanting dental work is improving all the time.  This is great news for the millions of Americans dealing with tooth decay, tooth injuries and severely discolored and damaged teeth.

One specific improvement being worked out is discussed in the article “Bone-Creating Protein Could Improve Dental Implant Success” by Paula Hinley on Science Daily discusses how a process of creating new bone can help strengthen implant success.  Basically, dental implants don’t work as well if the bone of the tooth is weak or thinning.  Recent studies show that by implanting bone protein into the sinus of animals, more bone is created within four weeks.

The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons states that about 69% of adults from the ages of 35-44 have lost at least 1 tooth because of decay, trauma or illness.  By 74 years of age about 26% of people have lost all permanent teeth.  This shows the growing need for repairs such as dental implants.  Before implants, dentures and bridges were some of the only options from cosmetic dentistry has come a long way in the past decade.  The discovery of new bone creation could be the next frontier of ensuring patients mouths are healthy, comfortable and beautiful.
