Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation Dentistry for Special Needs Patients
1. What is sedation dentistry?
Dental sedation involves giving patients medication to help them relax and prevent pain during dental treatment. It may be recommended to you if you experience dental phobia. It doesn’t put you to sleep like a general anesthetic; you’re still conscious and able to talk with your dentist.
2. What types of sedation do you offer?
We offer 3 types of sedation:
- Nitrous Oxide Sedation (laughing gas) administered through a mask. This doesn’t put you to sleep but it helps you relax if you have anxiety or even if you suffer from gag reflex.
- Intravenous IV Sedation, which is administered through a vein into the bloodstream. It’s a quick, controllable and safe way to put you in a deeper relaxed state and it is useful for longer procedures or patients with high anxiety/panic.
- Anesthesia, administered by our specialist anesthesiologist, puts patients in an unconscious state. It is used for extensive dental procedures or for patients with special needs that are extremely anxious and experience panic during dental procedures.
3. Sedation dentistry safe for special needs patients?
IV Sedation and Nitrous Oxide sedation are safe for all patients and for all ages. These can help relieve dental anxiety especially for any person with special needs.
4. How will my loved one feel after the sedation wears off?
Some common side effects of conscious sedation may last for a few hours after the procedure, these include: drowsiness, feelings of heaviness or sluggishness, loss of memory of the procedure (amnesia). This is why we recommend you come with company in case you need support after sedation.
5. How often should special needs patients visit the dentist?
Periodical cleanings and evaluations help to avoid future dental complications, so it’s important to visit the dental office regularly, according to the treatment plan and Doctors indications..
