Botox at the Dentist?

According to the article “Botox Treatments, Coming to a Dentist’s Office Near You” by Samantha Rollins on HealthLand.Time.com, more and more dentists are offering Botox treatment as a way to improve your smile.  The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that at least half a dozen dentists in the Twin Cities offer cosmetic dentistry with Botox and dermal filler treatments.  This is in addition to the traditional treatments used to improve your overall smile.

Dentists have long been using Botox to help with dental disorders such as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) but this is taking it a step further.  Dentists are well trained in the anatomy of the face and can be more qualified than anyone to deliver medication to the facial area.  States have varying regulation on the use of Botox.  For example, dentists are free to administer Botox in Minnesota as long as they follow the same standards specialists do, but in California and Nevada the use of Botox for cosmetic purposes is outside the scope of dentistry.

Cosmetic dentistry has come a long way in the past decade and it continues to develop new ways of improving procedures and experiences.  Botox would be a surprising new trend if it takes off in dentists’ office, but it could end up helping many patients achieve what they are looking for in oral health and appearance.
