Is Cosmetic Dentistry Right For You?

Cosmetic dentistry is more popular now than ever before, and the industry just keeps growing. Whether your teeth are discolored, chipped, misshapen or missing, there are several options available to improve your smile, with benefits that often go beyond simple aesthetics. An improvement in oral health has been shown to improve both physical and mental health, leading to higher quality of life, and proving to be an investment well worth making. Common cosmetic dental procedures include teeth whitening, bonding, crowns, veneers and reshaping and contouring. Learn more about each procedure below, and find out which option is right for you, and even how to find the right dentist for the job.

Teeth Whitening

Bleaching is a simple procedure that can produce dramatic results. Discoloration of teeth can be caused by a number of factors: medication, coffee, tea, wine, smoking, and age are a few common causes. There are several whitening options available through most cosmetic dentists, including at-home kits and in office treatments. Finding the right option for you is as simple as having a conversation with a dental professional.

Bonding

This procedure involves the use of tooth-colored material to fill in gaps or change the shape and color of teeth. While the treatment can be completed in just one office visit, the results last several years. This is a great option for individuals with chipped or slightly decayed teeth. Bonding, however, is more susceptible to staining or chipping than other forms of restoration.

Crowns

Also referred to as caps, crowns cover a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and appearance. While this restorative has the longest life expectancy of all options, due to their cost, crowns are typically only used in situations when other procedures are not an option.

Veneers

Dental veneers are thin pieces of porcelain or plastic that are placed over the front of teeth to change the color and/or shape. Little or no anesthesia is necessary, but multiple trips to the dentist are required. On the first trip, your dentist will take an impression of your tooth so that the veneer can be custom-made. Once the veneers are ready, your dentist will lightly buff the tooth to compensate for the added thickness of the piece before it is cemented on.

Contouring and reshaping

This process is used to correct irregularly shaped or crooked teeth. It is commonly used to alter the length, shape or position of your teeth, and is ideal for the patient looking to make subtle changes to their look. Before beginning, your dentist will likely take X-rays to determine the size and location of the pulp of each tooth to make sure that there’s enough bone between the teeth to support them.

Determining which procedure is right for you

The condition of your teeth and the look you’re going for will often determine which procedure is best for you. Discussing your desired results with your dentist is the best starting point. When talking with your dental professional, considering asking a number of questions: What will the changes look like? What should I expect through the course of treatment? What type of maintenance will be required? How much will it cost?
