It’s Never Too Late to Improve Your Smile With Orthodontics

Studies have shown that your smile is your most important attribute when making a first impression, and if you’re not happy with yours, it’s never too late to make a change. According to a recent Dental Tribune article, adults are seeking corrective orthodontic treatment in record numbers, showing that just because you’ve said goodbye to your youthful years doesn’t mean you have to let go of your desire for a perfect smile.

Recently, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) sought to find out just how many adults were taking advantage of the available technology and techniques to correct their teeth with orthodontics. They found that between the years 2012 and 2014, there was a 16% increase in adults seeking orthodontic treatment in the United States and Canada. They estimate that about 27%, or 1,441,000 orthodontic patient are adults, despite the unfair assumption that only adolescents get braces.

“Thanks to innovative technology and techniques, many adults are pleasantly surprised when they learn about today’s treatment options, which can be almost imperceptible,” said Morris N. Poole, ,DDS, and president of the AAO. “We have data showing that adults report improvements in their professional and personal lives after completing orthodontic treatment.”

Not only does a healthy, beautiful smile often lead to  a boost in self confidence, but the affordability of treatment is an added benefit. Majority of providers offer a variety of payment options, ranging from interest-free in-house financing to discounted treatment with payment in full at the beginning. Dental insurance often helps to offset a portion of the fee too, and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) can be used for orthodontic treatment as well.

“Despite the recession and difficult economic times in recent years, orthodontic treatment is at an all-time high,” Poole said. “A healthy, beautiful smile is an investment for a lifetime — no matter what age the treatment begins.”
