As the New Year quickly approaches, many are already gearing up for the most common resolution, finally taking care of that waistline. But did you know that an exercise routine could do more than just shed a few unwanted pounds? According to an article published in the Journal of Periodontology earlier this year, people who have high levels of fitness and maintain a healthy weight are less likely to show symptoms of gum disease.
The study was conducted using the body mass index and maximal oxygen consumption of subjects in conjunction with oral exams. Gum disease has been shown to be related to other physical diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and with the recent findings of this study, it makes even more sense to take care of your body through diet and exercise. The American Dental Association provides other factors that may also contribute to your risk of developing gum disease, including the use of tobacco products, ill-fitting bridges, defective fillings, pregnancy, and the use of oral contraceptives.
There are several signs to look for if you’re concerned about your gums. Be sure to contact your sedation dentist if you have red, tender, or swollen gums, persistent bad breath, loose permanent teeth, gums that have pulled away from your teeth, or any change in the fit of your partial dentures. The ADA recommends that everyone brush and floss their teeth twice a day, consume a balanced diet, and visit your dentist regularly. Add exercise to that list and you’ve got yourself one productive New Year’s resolution!
