The Oral Health of Men

Did you know that several studies have suggested that men are less likely to take care of their oral health needs when compared to their female counterparts? They often fail to seek preventive dental care and only visit the dentist when a problem arises. Because many oral diseases are preventable with proper dental care, this is a real problem. A recent article from the Marietta Daily Journal offered the following tips to men in an effort to reverse this unfortunate trend.

  • Visit your dentist at least twice a year for professional cleanings and exams. While it is widely accepted that these visits should occur bi-annually, the American Dental Association suggests that men who fall within certain high-risk groups (smokers and those with diabetes for example) might need to go more often to prevent periodontal disease.
  • Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once. The ADA recommends that you brush for two minutes, twice a day. When combined with regularly flossing, this oral hygiene routine can make a big difference.
  • Use a fluoride toothpaste and/or mouthwash, which have been proven to prevent dental cavities. Fluoride has been shown to inhibit the loss of healthy minerals found in tooth enamel, repair minor tooth decay, and reduce the ability of oral bacteria to produce acid.
  • Use a mouthguard when participating in contact sports, such as baseball, basketball, football, and soccer. The Academy of General Dentistry recommends wearing a mouthguard during individual sports too, like riding a bike, motorcycle or horses.
  • Quit smoking. Using tobacco products leads to an increased risk of developing oral cancer, gingivitis, periodontitis (gum disease) and tooth decay. It also contributes to bad breath and teeth stains.
  • Talk to your dentist about your medications. Pills for heart disease, high blood pressure and even depression can cause dry mouth, increasing the risk for cavities. You can ease dry mouth by drinking more water, chewing sugarless gum, using an alcohol-free mouth rinse, and avoiding overly salty foods, alcohol and carbonated beverages.
