There is no question that a sparkling, bright, white smile is highly sought after by most men and women. Studies have shown that a person’s smile is one of the primary traits noticed when making a first impression, and that an attractive smile makes that meeting both memorable and favorable. There are several products available, from toothpastes to adhesive strips, which are designed to help brighten your pearly whites. The good news is that most of them are effective over a lengthy period of time; however the drawbacks often deter many consumers from using them consistently. Whitening products are known to be associated with tooth sensitivity, causing some to believe they’re just too painful to be worth it. But wait, there’s hope! A recent Dentistry Today article (“New Solution to Teeth Whitening Sensitivity”) reported that a new study has found a possible solution to this all-too-common problem.
The study appeared in the Journal of the American Dental Association and found that a substance containing calcium could lower the sensitivity resulting from tooth whitening agents. Up until now, manufacturers have attempted to thwart this “pain-in-the-tooth” side effect by using desensitizers, such as potassium nitrate and fluoride, however their effectiveness were never proven. The researchers in the study blame mineral loss as the cause for tooth sensitivity, and claim that the use of calcium compounds prevents such loss. The study was conducted using 40 adults at the State University of Ponta Grossa Dental School in Brazil, using two controlled groups; one receiving whitening gel with the calcium compound and the other receiving gel without. Both tooth sensitivity and color enhancement were observed. Much to the delight of the research team, the results showed similar color effectiveness between both groups, but tooth sensitivity was found to be significantly lower in the calcium compound group. Eureka!
Over-the-counter teeth whitening products are safe to use and mostly effective over a period of time. They use a low concentration of whitener, which requires a lengthy period of time to achieve the desired effect. If interested in brightening your smile more rapidly, many cosmetic dentists are able to assist you. At Miami Dental Sedation Spa, they offer a variety of whitening treatments to meet your unique needs. Take home bleaching is available, which offers a higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide causing it to work quicker than its OTC counterpart. Dr. Luis Sanchez or Dr. Gabriel Vidal will make an impression of your mouth in order to produce custom trays that are meant to fit over your teeth. The appropriate bleaching gel is then supplied along with instructions on how to use the product and for how long. The acclaimed Zoom whitening procedure is also available and is completed in office. A very high concentration of hydrogen peroxide is activated by a special light, with the procedure taking approximately one hour. In order to achieve the best results in as minimal time as possible, MDSS also offers a power bleaching treatment, which combines the Zoom and Take-home bleaching procedures. Teeth whitening is an inexpensive and simple way to improve your overall look and appearance. Contact our office today to discuss which options are best suited for you. Keep on smiling!
