Cosmetic Dentistry: Porcelain Veneers

In the world of cosmetic dentistry, porcelain veneer are becoming more and more popular.  They are an effective way to brighten any smile and it’s becoming more affordable.  Surprisingly, many do not understand exactly what a veneer is, or how it can help improve a smile.  Simply put, it’s a thin layer of restorative material put over an existing tooth surface to either improve the look of a tooth or protect the tooth from further damage.

The history of veneers goes back to the dentist Charles Pincus, when veneers were held on by denture adhesive and did not stay on very long.  They were very useful in quickly changing the appearance of someone’s smile.  Research as far back as 1982 showed that porcelain could be etched with hydrofluoric acid and the bonding could be strengthened to permanently attach veneers to a tooth.  This was a big movement for veneers as people sought to permanently change the appearance of the smile they were unhappy with.

Today there are significantly improved bonding methods and veneers can last upwards of 30 years.  Veneers are a very important tool to the cosmetic dentist and are used often.  Seeing before and after photos of veneers can be impressive since smiles still look natural but much brighter and healthier.  Dentists also use veneers to restore a tooth that has been damaged due to decay or an injury.  It’s important to sit down and discuss options with your dentists because although veneers are a great option for many, they are not for everyone.
