The Aesthetically Appealing Porcelain Veneer

Are you looking to safely and effectively enhance your smile? Whether you’re unhappy with the size, shape, or color of your teeth, porcelain veneers may be the solution you’ve been searching for.  These extremely thin and custom made materials are bonded to the front of teeth to aesthetically improve your smile by repairing unwanted features, such as discoloration, natural wear and tear, irregular shape, or teeth that have been chipped or broken.

The procedure for receiving dental veneers is fairly simple and straightforward, and can usually be completed in about three visits to your cosmetic dentist.  The first visit will involve a consultation, where you and your dentist will discuss the results you are trying to achieve.  There will be an examination to ensure that veneers are appropriate for you and dental impressions may be taken of your mouth and teeth.  The next step is to prepare your teeth for the procedure.  This requires approximately ½ millimeter of enamel to be removed.  The impressions of your teeth will then be sent to a dental laboratory for the construction of your veneer(s).  Once completed, your dentist will carefully fit the veneer to your tooth before permanently cementing it.  After your tooth is cleaned, polished, and etched, special cement is applied to the veneer which is then placed on your tooth.  A unique light beam will activate chemicals in the cement that will cause it to harden very quickly.  Any excess cement will be removed and your bite will be evaluated to check for necessary adjustments.  Your dentist will likely want to see you again in a couple of weeks to check your gums and the position of the veneers.

Porcelain veneers are stain resistant, mimic natural tooth appearance, and last approximately 5 to 10 years before needing to be replaced.  They don’t require any special care, simply practice good oral hygiene as usual.  Your dentist may recommend avoiding stain-causing food and beverages, such as coffee, tea, or red wine.  They have become quite popular as a strong, aesthetic alternative to crowns.  But, just like all things in life, there are a few drawbacks that you should consider if you’re thinking about getting veneers.  The procedure is not reversible, so once you’ve started the process, there’s no turning back.  Sensitivity may be a side effect due to the removal of enamel.  Individuals who grind their teeth or regularly bite their nails or chew on hard objects are poor candidates for the procedure, as this can cause veneers to crack or chip.  If you suffer from a dental condition, such as gum disease or severe tooth decay, veneers are not recommended.  A great smile can do wonders for your self-esteem, confidence, and general outlook.  Talk to your cosmetic dentist to find out if porcelain veneers are right for you.
